ESCLUSIVO Nachbar: "Vorrei vedere nuove arene in Italia. Exum la sorpresa del mercato"

Abbiamo colto l'occasione di fare qualche domanda al capo dell'associazione giocatori Eurolega nonché ex conoscenza del nostro campionato.

A giugno 2022 Bostjan Nachbar (visto in Italia con i colori della Benetton Treviso ad inizi anni 2000) è stato confermato, con rinnovo di 4 anni, amministratore delegato dell'ELPA (Associazione giocatori Eurolega), carica che ricopre dal 2018 quando venne fondata. 

Eurolega sta vivendo una fase di transizione, si attende la nomina del nuovo CEO dopo l'addio di Bertomeu, la delicata questione delle squadre russe ed un mercato che fatica a “rinnovarsi” con l'NBA che ogni anno fa inceppa di talenti. A Basketball-Evolution abbiamo colto l'occasione di intervistare Nachbar proprio su queste tematiche.

Qual è stata la decisione più importante presa dall'ELPA fino ad oggi e quale sarà la prossima?

In realtà, la decisione più importante è stata quella di istituire l'ELPA. Per troppo tempo, i giocatori di EuroLeague non hanno avuto voce collettiva nei rapporti con il campionato. Sono felice e orgoglioso che questa generazione di giocatori abbia deciso di farsi avanti e lavorare per cambiare le cose da soli. Siamo partiti da cose semplici come il miglioramento delle condizioni di lavoro (niente bollini sul campo, migliori standard di viaggio, miglior calendario delle partite, stanze singole negli hotel, limitazioni di preseason e allenamenti, ecc.). Abbiamo anche istituito un sistema di secondo parere medico convalidato e un sistema di pagamento scaduto, che è molto efficace. I giocatori ora sono diventati un partner importante e alla pari della competizione. Per quanto riguarda il futuro, ora abbiamo il contratto collettivo con la Lega, che vogliamo potenziare e migliorare nei prossimi anni.

Puoi parlarci dell'importanza di Kyle Hines nelle relazioni con i giocatori, specialmente quelli statunitensi. Com'è la tua relazione?

Kyle è stato uno dei membri più importanti dell'ELPA. È stato uno dei primi giocatori che si è fatto avanti e ha contribuito a fondare l'ELPA. Ha mostrato ad altri giocatori statunitensi che l'ELPA è per tutti i giocatori di EuroLeague, non solo ai giocatori locali. I giocatori attuali e futuri dovrebbero essere grati a lui e Gigi Datome. Entrambi sono alcune delle persone più altruiste che io conosca. Capiscono il business del basket e desiderano proteggere i giocatori in questo ambiente.

Dead-Line del mercato di Eurolega ed EuroCup, c'è l'intenzione di apportare modifiche ai tempi: ad esempio, mettendo la stessa data su entrambe le competizioni o allungandola?

Abbiamo discussioni regolari con la dirigenza della lega su come migliorare la competizione. La preoccupazione dell'ELPA è che il sistema deve consentire ai giocatori di avere il maggior successo possibile. Personalmente, vorrei vedere più regole e restrizioni su come e quando ingaggiare i giocatori. Non per limitare i giocatori, ma per fornire loro un percorso più chiaro su come trovare la giusta misura nelle giuste condizioni. Troppe volte i giocatori non capiscono il sistema o il mercato.

Credi che i contratti Two-Way della NBA stiano influenzando il mercato dell'Eurolega? Molti giocatori preferiscono militare in G-League in attesa della convocazione NBA piuttosto che giocare una stagione in Europa e il mercato dell'Eurolega coinvolge sempre gli stessi giocatori.

Per quanto riguarda EuroLeague, no, non credo che i contatti bilaterali siano attualmente un grosso problema. Certo, EuroLeague potrebbe perdere un giocatore o due in estate a causa di NBA Two-Ways, ma la maggior parte delle volte i contratti EuroLeague sono molto meglio di Two-Way. L'NBA avrà sempre il suo fascino e questo è comprensibile. Ma non dimenticare che molti giocatori scelgono anche l'EuroLeague rispetto al ruolo più piccolo nell'NBA. Il problema più grande è per altri campionati, come EuroCup, BCL, ecc. A quel livello, i giocatori prendono spesso seriamente in considerazione il contratto NBA Two-Way.

Credi che in futuro ci sarà una sorta di Salary Cap nelle squadre europee o è troppo lontano per il basket europeo?

Se il "limite salariale" significherebbe effettivamente una competizione più equa, in cui i budget complessivi dei club sono più uniformi tra i club, allora sì. In questo momento le differenze tra i budget dei club sono troppo grandi. Credo che sarebbe bello vedere un sistema in cui un giocatore possa scegliere tra più club contemporaneamente. Attualmente, quando un giocatore raggiunge un certo livello, può scegliere solo tra un paio di fiori. Gli altri club o sono fuori dalla sua fascia di prezzo o non possono permetterselo. Qualsiasi sistema di "salary cap" avrebbe bisogno della piena collaborazione di tutte le parti interessate (campionato, club, giocatori, agenti,...) e questo lo rende complicato. Un ulteriore ostacolo potrebbe essere la tassazione in diversi paesi, che rende molto difficile tale sistema...

So che è una questione molto delicata ma, purtroppo, ancora di attualità: volevo chiederti se l'ELPA è o lavorerà in futuro su una clausola a tutela dei giocatori sotto contratto con squadre russe in caso di risoluzione del contratto a causa del conflitto.

L'ELPA proteggerà sempre un giocatore, indipendentemente dal tipo di situazione. Abbiamo imparato molto dalla crisi del Covid-19 e apportato modifiche/proposte contrattuali appropriate a tutela dei giocatori. Lo stesso vale per la sospensione dei club russi dalle competizioni. Il nostro team legale è stato estremamente attivo e ha aiutato molti giocatori a liberarsi dai contratti con i club russi. Uno di questi esempi è Kevin Pangos, che ora ha firmato con Milano.

Il mercato è ancora attivo, ma ti chiedo qual è stato il movimento che ti ha sorpreso di più e quale pensi avrà il maggiore impatto sulla squadra e sulla concorrenza?

Per me personalmente, la sorpresa più grande è stata Dante Exum che è passato dall'FC Barcelona al Partizan Belgrado. Se rimarrà in salute, penso che potrebbe essere uno dei giocatori più migliorati in EuroLeague la prossima stagione.

Hai giocato in Italia negli anni d'oro del movimento, cosa ne pensi oggi del campionato italiano? Hai avuto modo di vedere qualche partita?

Guardo regolarmente le partite di campionato italiano, in particolare i playoff. Penso che il campionato italiano stia crescendo e migliorando ogni anno. Mi piacerebbe anche vedere la costruzione di nuove arene, come abbiamo visto di recente in Germania, Spagna, Turchia, ecc... Il basket è uno sport profondamente legato alla storia sportiva italiana e sono sicuro che continueremo a vedere I club italiani tornano ai vertici del basket europeo.

What has been the most important decision taken by ELPA to date and what will be the next?

Actually, the most important decision has been to establish ELPA. For too long, players in EuroLeague had no collective voice in relations to the league. I am happy and proud that this generation of players decided to step up and work towards changing things for themselves. We started with simple things like improving the working conditions (no stickers on the court, better travel standards, improved game schedule, single rooms in hotels, preseason and practice limitations, etc..). We also established a validated second medical opinion system, and an overdue payment system, which is very effective. The players now became an important an equal partner of the competition. As for the future, we now have the collective agreement with the league, which we wish to upgrade and improve over the next years.

Can you tell us about the importance of Kyle Hines in relations with players, specially US players. How is your relationship?

Kyle has been on of the most important ELPA members. He was one of the first players that stepped up and helped establish ELPA. He has shown to other US players that ELPA is intended for all players in EuroLeague, not just for local players. Current and future players should be thankful to him and Gigi Datome. Both of them are some of the most unselfish persons that I know. They understand the business of basketball and wish to protect the players in this environment.

Dead-Line of the Euroleague and EuroCup market, are you planning to make changes to the timing: for example, putting the same date on both competitions or extending it?

We have regular discussions with the league management on how to improve the competition. ELPA's concern is that the system must allow for players to be as successful as possible. Personally, I would like to see more rules and restrictions on how and when to sign players. Not to restrict the players, but to provide them with a clearer path on how to find a right fit under the right conditions. Too many times the players do not understand the system or the market.

Do you think the NBA's Two-Way contracts are influencing the Euroleague market? Many players prefer military in the G-League awaiting the NBA call than playing a season in Europe and the Euroleague market always involves the same players.

As for EuroLeague - no, I do not think that Two-Way contacts currently present a big problem. Sure, EuroLeague might lose a player or two in the summer due to NBA Two-Ways, but most of the time EuroLeague contracts are much better than Two-Way. NBA will always have its appeal an that is understandable. But do not forget that many players also choose EuroLeague over the smaller NBA role. Bigger problem is for other leagues, such as EuroCup, BCL, etc. At that level, players more often seriously consider NBA Two-Way contract.

Do you think that in the future there will be a sort of Salary Cap in European teams or is it too far away for European basketball?

If the “Salary Cap” would actually mean a more equal competition, where overall clubs budgets are more even between the clubs, then yes. Right now the differences between clubs’ budgets are too big. I believe that it would be great to see a system where a player could chose between more clubs at the same time. Currently, when a player reaches a certain level, he can chose only between a couple of clubs. The other clubs are either out of his price range, or they clubs cannot afford him. Any “salary cap” system would need a full collaboration from all stakeholders (league, clubs, players, agents,…) and that makes it complicated. Additional obstacle could be taxations in different countries, that make such system very difficult...

I know it is a very sensitive issue but, unfortunately, still topical: I wanted to ask you if ELPA is or will work in the future on a clause to protect players under contract with Russian teams in case they want to terminate the contract due to the conflict.

ELPA will always protect a player, no matter what kind of situation occurs. We learned a lot from Covid-19 crisis and made appropriate contractual changes/proposals that protect players. The same is with suspension of Russian clubs from competitions. Out legal team was extremely active and helped many players to get released from contracts with Russian clubs. One of such examples is Kevin Pangos, who now signed with Milano.

The transfer market is still active, but I ask you which was the movement that surprised you the most and which do you think will have the greatest impact on the team and competition?

For me personally, the biggest surprise was Dante Exum going from FC Barcelona to Partizan Belgrade. If he remains healthy, I think he could be one of the most improved players in EuroLeague next season.

You played in Italy in the golden years of the movement, what do you think today of the Italian championship? Have you had the chance to see any matches?

I regularly watch Italian league games, especially the Playoffs. I think Italian league is rising and getting better each year. I would also like to see some new arenas being built as well, like we recently saw in Germany, Spain, Turkey, etc... Basketball is a sport that is deeply connected with Italian sports history and I am sure we will continue to see Italian clubs rise back to the top of European basketball.
